If you say or do something sagely, you do it in a very wise way — the kind that comes from a lot of experience, not from showing off. People nod sagely, smile sagely, or remark sagely. It is sage (“wise from having lived”) plus -ly, so it tells you how the action is done. Fairly literary. In speech, that nodding picture is the one you will hear most. Though actually, writers sometimes use sagely with a tiny smile: the person looks wise, but they may only be playing the part. There is a rarer describing use — a sagely old teacher, meaning like a sage — but almost all the sagely you will meet is the how-you-do-it word.
