Sagebrush is a small grey-green bush that covers huge dry stretches of the western United States — Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, the high plains. It is woody, low, and smells a little like the sage you cook with, which is why English speakers named it sagebrush. Though actually, it is not kitchen sage. Kitchen sage is a garden herb; sagebrush is a wild plant of dry country. “Sagebrush country” is a set picture in American English: pale bushes, dust, and a very wide sky. Cowboys, Western films, and geography books use the word as an ordinary nature name, not as science-talk. If you have never seen that land, picture after of those dusty bushes, not a jar on a spice rack.
組成From sage + brush, from resemblance in odor and appearance to Salvia officinalis (kitchen sage). Brush here means low woody plants.
