Safekeeping is the looking-after of something so it stays safe — not lost, not stolen, not broken. You put a thing in safekeeping, or leave it in someone's safekeeping: a passport at the hotel desk, jewellery in a bank box, papers with a lawyer. The word can name the action (you hand it over for safekeeping) or the state (it is in safekeeping now). People also use it for people, a little more formally: a child left in a neighbour's safekeeping. It is a noun. In ordinary English you do not “safekeep” a bag; you leave it in safekeeping, or give it to someone for safekeeping. Though actually, the heart of the word is trust as much as locks. The thing is safe because a person or a place has taken charge of it. You hear it in careful, grown-up talk — hotels, banks, families — not in slang.
