A sadhu is a holy man in the Hindu religion, most often in India. He has given up a normal home, job, and family, and lives a very simple life — little money, few clothes, a lot of prayer. You may see a sadhu walking from town to town, sitting by a river, or living away from other people. Though actually, not every man in orange robes is a sadhu, and not every sadhu looks the same: some stay in one place, some travel, some are quiet, some talk with anyone who comes. In English this word is used for that Hindu holy man. It is not a general word for every kind of monk or priest, and it is not the same as a Buddhist monk, even though both may live simply. The word feels a little special and foreign in English; people use it when they mean this Hindu figure, not as everyday slang.
