Sacramento is a city in the US state of California. It is the capital, so the state government sits there — not in Los Angeles or San Francisco, which surprises some students. It is also a port city, on a river that shares the same name. It lies inland, in California’s big central valley, and it gets very hot in summer. The name is Spanish: sacramento, a sacrament, meaning a holy Christian rite. Spanish explorers gave the name to the river, and the city grew from that. Though actually, when Americans say Sacramento they are usually talking about , the heat, or a long drive, not about church.
