Rye is a type of grain, similar to wheat, that grows well in cold climates. It's ground into flour to make rye bread — a darker, denser bread with a stronger taste than regular white bread, popular in parts of Europe and in classic American sandwiches like pastrami on rye. Rye is also used to make a type of whiskey.
