Rutland is a county in the middle of England — a county is a named local area, a bit like a large 縣. It is the smallest county in England, and people in Britain sometimes smile about how small it is. The main town is Oakham. Though actually the tidy label “smallest county” hides a messy bit of recent history: for some years in the late twentieth century it was joined to a bigger neighbour, and then it was made a county on its own again. On a map it sits inland, not on the sea. It is a place name, not a common noun, so we write it with a capital letter.
拉特蘭(英格蘭最小的郡)
組成Unclear. Written in Old English as Roteland and Ritelanede. It may be from a word for cattle plus land, or from a personal name Rota plus land. Nobody has to pick one story.
