    If metal is rustproof, water and air will not turn it into that red-brown flake we call rust. A maker rustproofs a car, a screw, or a garden tool by coating it, or by using a metal that does not rust easily. You will see the word on outdoor furniture, bikes, and hardware packets. It is an adjective (rustproof screws) and also a verb (to rustproof the frame). Though actually, rustproof is a promise about rust, not about every kind of harm: the thing can still scratch, bend, or break. And “proof” here is not “evidence”. It is the same piece as in waterproof: safe against that thing.
