1. 1

Rumpelstiltskin is the little man in a Grimm brothers’ fairy tale, the one people remember because of his name. A poor girl must spin straw into gold. A strange, ugly dwarf appears and does it for her, but he wants a terrible price: her first child. Later she is queen and has a baby, and he comes to collect — unless she can guess what he is called. She finds the name, says “Rumpelstiltskin!”, and he flies into a rage. The story is really about a name as power: if you know what to call him, he loses his hold. English speakers use Rumpelstiltskin for that character, not for a real person. Though actually, adults almost never use the name as a joke in daily talk; children meet him in storybooks, and that is where the word lives.
