Rummy is a simple card game. Players take turns picking up and putting down cards, and they try to make groups: three or four of the same number, or a run of cards in the same suit (for example 5-6-7 of hearts). When you have grouped all your cards, you go out and usually win that round. There are many house versions — gin rummy is the famous faster cousin. It is a family-table game, not a casino game, though people do play it for small stakes. The name’s origin is unknown. People have guessed a link to old poker slang rum, or even German Ruhm (“fame”), but nobody has nailed it down. English rummy can also mean “odd” (from rum + -y); that is a completely different use. Here we only mean the card game.
