A ruminant is an animal that eats grass or leaves and has a special way of breaking that food down. Cows, sheep, goats, deer, and are ruminants. They have several stomachs; the first is called the rumen. They swallow food quickly, then bring it back up later and chew it again — that second chew is chewing the . This lets them live on tough plants that other animals cannot use well. The word belongs in biology class and on farms. You would not use it for a person, except as a joke about someone who thinks slowly. As an adjective, ruminant just means “of this kind of animal.” At the table we just say cow or sheep; ruminant is the school-science word.
