When we call a building ruined, we mean it has been broken so badly that people cannot really use it any more. Some walls may still stand, but the roof is gone, the inside is empty, and the whole thing is falling down. You will see this on old castles, houses after a fire, or temples nobody has looked after for years. It is more than “old” and less than “gone”: the building is still there as a shape, but it is almost completely destroyed. Photographers and travel writers like the word; in ordinary talk people also say the place is in ruins, or just “knocked down.” English stretches ruined to other losses too (“the rain ruined our picnic”), but that is a looser use. This sense is about the building.
