Rugger is a British informal word for rugby, and more tightly for Rugby Union — the fifteen-player game, not Rugby League. It was coined at Oxford in the 1880s in the same playful way as soccer, from Association football: chop the word and stick -er on the end. Rugby itself is named after Rugby School in England, where the game grew. Though actually, in most of the world, including Taiwan, people just say rugby; rugger sounds British, a bit , a bit old school. An American is unlikely to say it. If someone in London says Are you coming to rugger? they mean the rugby match, usually Union. It is not American football, and it is not a person.
組成rugby + the Oxford slang ending -er. Soccer was built the same way, at the same time and place, from Association football.
