Rudimentary describes something very basic and simple — an early, undeveloped form of a skill, tool, or idea, not the full or advanced version. You might have rudimentary Spanish (just a few words), rudimentary furniture (a bed and a chair, nothing more), or a rudimentary understanding of a topic (enough to get by, not enough to be an expert). It's a slightly formal word, common in writing more than casual speech.
