Ructions are angry talk and complaints when a lot of people are fed up about something. Someone has changed a plan, or a rule feels unfair, and now you can hear the grumbling. British English loves this word, and it almost always comes in the plural: there will be ructions, there were ructions at the meeting. It is informal, a little old-fashioned in a friendly way — the sort of thing a parent or a newspaper column might say. It does not have to mean a fight. It means trouble in the air because people are annoyed. If only two people snap at each other, argument is enough; ructions suggests a wider stir. American speakers are more likely to say ruckus or fuss for a similar scene.
