RSVP is four letters you see on an invitation. They ask you to say whether you are coming — yes or no, not just a smile. They were taken as a set of letters from French répondez s'il vous plaît, which is ‘reply, if you please.’ In English we almost always write RSVP and say the four letters; we do not say the French sentence. People also use it as a verb: ‘Please RSVP by Friday’ means please tell us by Friday if you will come. Though actually, some people treat RSVP as ‘please come’ — that is not what it means. The host still needs the reply, including no. In Taiwan, wedding cards often write 敬請回覆 or the letters RSVP; both are understood.
