A roustabout is a worker hired for hard, simple jobs — lifting, carrying, — not for a skilled trade. The word turns up with ports and docks, with , and with circuses (the people who put up tents and move heavy gear). It is mainly American workplace English and sounds a little old. A student in Taiwan would more often say labourer, or just name the job. Older dictionary lines say 'a man' because that is how the word grew up; the work is not only for men now, but the word still carries that older, rough-job flavour. It is a job title, not an insult by itself, though it can sound blunt.
