If you roundly criticise or roundly condemn someone, you do it strongly, fully, and with no softness — a hard, complete telling-off, often in public. The word almost lives glued to verbs of blame: criticise, condemn, denounce, attack. You can also hear roundly defeated, where it means thoroughly, completely beaten; that is the same ‘all the way, no half measures’ feeling, stretched off the blame verbs. What it does not mean, though actually this is the trap, is ‘in a circle’ or ‘in a round shape’. If you only know round as a circle, roundly looks like it should mean ‘in a circular way’, but that reading is rare to the point of being a joke. The tone is a little formal, a little newspaper-like; a child would just say they told him off badly. Older English used roundly more widely for ‘, , thoroughly’; today’s student will mostly meet the ‘strongly criticised’ use, and then the cousin ‘roundly beaten / defeated’.

組成From Middle English roundly, roundely, roundliche: round + -ly. Here round has the old ‘full, complete’ feel, not the circle shape.
