A Roundhead was a supporter of Parliament in the English Civil War of the 1640s, fighting against the King (whose side were nicknamed Cavaliers). The name comes from their hair: many Parliament men wore it cropped short, so the head looked round, while fashionable wore long hair. It began as a bit of mockery and then stuck as history’s label. You will meet it in history class and in historical novels, almost never in ordinary chat unless someone is making a joke about old . It is a proper noun, usually capitalised. It does not mean a person with a round-shaped head in general, and in modern English it is not a compliment or an insult — it is just the old side’s name. Though actually, like many war nicknames, it a messy set of beliefs into one haircut: not every Parliament man cropped his hair, and not every short-haired man was in the army. The opposite label, Cavalier, is the other team’s nickname, not a piece of the same word.
