Rounders is a British bat-and-ball game, mostly played by children at school. You hit the ball and then run around the outside of the pitch, touching bases as you go — so it looks a lot like a simpler, softer cousin of baseball or softball. A rounder is scored when you get all the way round. The bat is usually small and the mood is playground more than professional sport. It is very much a UK and Irish word; in Taiwan almost nobody grows up playing it, so if you meet it, it will be in a story set in Britain or in a lesson explaining ‘a game like baseball’. Though actually the rules are not baseball’s rules, and calling it ‘British baseball’ is only a rough help, not a true match.
