A roundel is a small round design — a circle, or rings inside rings — used as a mark. The place you are most likely to meet the word is on military aircraft: many air forces paint a roundel on the wing or body so you can tell whose plane it is. The British one, red, white and blue rings, is the picture most textbooks have in mind. In art and heraldry a roundel is simply a round disc on a shield or a painting. It is a rather specialist, slightly old-fashioned noun; everyday people might just say ‘the circle mark’ or ‘the target logo’. You would not use it for any random circle on a page — it is a design that stands for something, a badge in the shape of a circle. Do not mix it up with a (the road) or with rounders (the British ball game), which only share the ‘round’ sound.
