A round-table discussion (or round-table meeting, round-table talks) is one where everyone is meant to speak as equals. The picture behind the words is a table with no head: on a round table, no one sits in the boss’s chair, so the shape itself says ‘we are on the same level’. In real life the table may not be round at all — we still say round-table for the equal-talk idea. You hear it in news, , and fairly formal office English: a round-table on school hours, a round-table with union leaders. It feels a little official and a little hopeful; though actually the powerful people in the room often still talk more, and the name does not make the meeting fair. The noun a round table is the event itself. The old story of King Arthur’s Round Table helped make the picture famous, but today’s round-table is just a meeting format, not knights. As an adjective before a noun it is usually .
