Roulette is a casino game. A wheel spins, a small ball runs around the rim, and then the ball falls into one of many numbered holes, red or black. Players put money on a number, a colour, or a group of numbers, and they win if they guessed right. The casino is built to win over time. People also stretch the word to any situation where you take a chance and something bad might happen — above all in Russian roulette, which is not a table game and is deadly. Though actually, when someone says “it’s a bit of a roulette” they often only mean “you cannot know how it will turn out.” The first meaning, the one on the sign above the table, is the spinning wheel.
組成Borrowed from French roulette, “little wheel.” The looser sense “a situation with a random chance of real harm” may have been taken from the phrase Russian roulette.
