Rouge is the pink or red stuff people put on their cheeks so the face looks warmer or brighter. It can be a powder you brush on, or a cream you rub in. The idea is a little colour, as if you had just come in from the cold — though actually, people also use it more heavily, for the stage or for a look that is meant to be noticed. In shops and on makeup videos now, the usual word is blush. Rouge sounds older: the sort of word a grandmother might still use, or that you meet in a novel. English took it from French, where it simply means “red.” People once said lip rouge for lipstick too; that use has almost gone. You will still see rouge on old brand names and in stories.
組成Borrowed from French rouge (“red”), from Latin rubeus (“red, reddish”). English had a rare older word that looked similar, but this makeup word was borrowed again; it is not found until around 1750. (Game senses of the same spelling are a different story, and their origin is unknown.)

In the Eton College field game, a scoring move accomplished by touching the ball down behind the opponents' goal-line (somewhat similar to the try in rugby). Originally, the player who scored the rouge had a chance to kick a goal, and the rouge was used as a tie-breaker if an equal number of goals was scored by each side. In the contemporary Eton College field game, a five-point score is awarded for kicking the ball so that it deflects off one of the opposing players and goes beyond the opposition's end of the pitch, and then touching the ball.
