A rotunda is a round building, or a round hall inside a building, often with a high dome over it. The shape is the point: the walls go in a circle, and people standing in the middle can look all the way around. Famous public buildings use a rotunda as a grand open space — a place meant to feel large and important. You will see the word in writing about buildings more than in casual talk. It comes from Latin for “round,” and in this building sense it is tied to an old name for a round church: the Pantheon in Rome was once called Sancta Maria Rotunda.
