A Rottweiler is a large, heavy dog with a black coat and tan marks on the face, chest, and legs. It was bred as a working dog, and many people keep one as a guard dog because it is strong, watchful, and can look fierce. Like any big dog, it is not dangerous by magic — that depends on how it is raised and handled — but the breed has a serious reputation, and in news stories a Rottweiler is often the picture of a powerful guard dog. The name comes from Rottweil, a town in Germany, where these dogs were once common. In English the breed name is often written with a capital R.
