Rote is a way of learning: you repeat something many times until it sticks, without stopping to think hard about why. If you chant a list until you can say it in your sleep, that is rote. The usual phrases are by rote, rote learning, and learn by rote. It can help with things that really do need to sit in memory — times tables, a poem, the shape of a character. Though actually, the word often carries a small complaint. “They learned it by rote” can mean they can repeat it, but they do not really understand it, and they may freeze when the test looks even a little different. Teachers argue about how much of this is useful. The history of the word itself is honestly not clear. It comes from an old English word for custom or habit. Some people have tried to tie it to route, or to Latin , “wheel,” because goes round and round. Careful dictionaries say those ideas are not proven, so we should not pretend we know.
組成From Middle English rote, “custom, habit.” Further origin unknown. Links to French route or Latin rota are not accepted by careful dictionaries.
