    A rota is a list that shows who in a group must do a job, and when. A hospital has a rota for night shifts. A café has a rota for who opens up. The work is meant to go round, so the same person is not always stuck with the hard day. That picture is old: Latin rota meant “wheel,” and the jobs turn like a wheel. It is everyday workplace English, not a fancy word. Though actually, it is a British word. An American is much more likely to say roster or schedule. Use rota in the US and people may still follow you, but it can sound British. Do not mix it up with rotor, the spinning part of a machine. They share the old “wheel” idea, but they are not the same word.
