A rooster is a male chicken. The female is a hen; the babies are chicks. Roosters are the ones that crow in the early morning. This is the everyday American word. In Britain people have long called the same bird a cock — though actually, cock also became a rude word for a man's body, so American English mostly away from it and kept rooster instead. You will see rooster in children's books, on farms, and in American English lessons. It is a plain, slightly farm-like word, not formal and not slang.
