Rooibos is a drink from South Africa, made from the leaves of a bush that grows there. In the cup it is red-brown, a little sweet and earthy, and it has no caffeine, so people often drink it at night. Though actually, it is not tea from the usual tea plant; it only looks and feels like tea once it is brewed. The name is and means “red bush.” Shops may also sell honeybush, a cousin drink from a related South African plant. Some English speakers loosely call rooibos “red tea,” which is a trap for students: in Chinese, 紅茶 is black tea from the ordinary tea plant, not this bush. Say rooibos, or the shop name you already know. The usual English saying is roughly “ROY-boss.”
