Roofies is a street name for a strong sleeping drug. Someone may crush it or slip it into a drink so the other person becomes sleepy, confused, or fully unconscious, and cannot fight, choose, or remember. It is used in sexual assault. This is not a cute or funny word, even when a film says it lightly. Though actually, the pill began as a real sleeping medicine; the street word (a roofie, or roofies) is what you hear in crime news, warnings, and shows. In many places it is illegal to have without a doctor’s paper. People also stretch the word: they say “roofies” for almost any drug dropped in a drink, not only the original pill. The word is informal and ugly. If someone tells you never to leave your drink, this is one reason why.
