Romaine is a lettuce with long, stiff leaves that stand up in a head, not a round soft ball. The leaves are , and near the thick white stem they can taste a little bitter — that is the bitter taste dictionaries mention, though the green parts are milder. Cooks like it in Caesar salad because it stays crisp under dressing. In British English people often call the same plant cos lettuce. It is ordinary supermarket food, not a fancy word.
組成From French laitue romaine, “Roman lettuce,” and from the French word romaine. It was named for a supposed link with Rome.
