1. 1

A roll-up is a cigarette you make yourself: you roll tobacco in a thin paper, often with a little filter. It is mainly British everyday talk; in American English people are more likely to say a hand-rolled cigarette. Some prefer roll-ups because they are cheaper than a packet, or because they can choose the tobacco. The word can sound casual, even a bit rough. Though actually you may also see roll-up on a poster stand in a shop (a banner that rolls up into a base) — same spelling, different object. The cigarette is the old, common sense.
