Used in radio talk to say that you have heard and understood a message.

For the everyday word, you can picture a pilot pressing the radio button and sending one short word back: your message landed here. It is not agreement and not a promise — just a receipt, said out loud.
In the old radio alphabet the letter R was spoken as 'Roger', and R stood for 'received'. The usage is attested in the U.S. military from 1941 (the RAF reportedly from 1938), so the word is really just a spoken letter doing a job.
