Roe is fish eggs when we talk about them as food. The tight cluster of tiny eggs from a female fish is hard roe; the soft pale stuff from a male fish is soft roe (that is really sperm, though menus almost never say so). You meet it as bright orange salmon eggs on sushi, as a smear of cod roe on toast, or as caviar when the eggs come from sturgeon and cost a great deal. It is a cooking and market word, not the usual biology-class word — scientists are more likely to say spawn or eggs. There is another, completely different word roe meaning a small deer; same spelling, nothing to do with fish.
