A rodeo is a show, mostly in the American West and also in parts of Mexico and South America, where cowboys and cowgirls ride wild horses, try to stay on bulls, throw ropes around cattle, and race. It began as real ranch work — gathering cattle by riding around them — and later became a sport and a loud public entertainment. The word feels American, dusty, and tied to that cowboy world; you would not use it for a horse race in England or for a temple parade in Taiwan. Some people mind how the animals are treated; others treat it as skill and tradition. In US English you may also hear it as a verb, to rodeo, meaning to take part in these events, though that use is less common.
