A roadrunner is a slim, long-tailed bird that lives mainly in dry country in the south-west of North America. It can fly a little, but what it is famous for is running — very fast, along the ground, often along roads, which is how it got the name. It hunts lizards, insects, and even small snakes. The cartoon bird that goes “beep beep” is a joke version of this bird: real roadrunners do not outrun trains, but they do run in a straight, busy way that looks a bit like that. The English name was probably copied from Spanish correcaminos, which already meant “road-runner”.
