A roadie is a person who works for a band on tour. Their job is the practical side of a show: packing the speakers and lights, loading the van or truck, setting everything up on stage, then taking it all down and moving it to the next town. “The road” here means the touring life — being away, town after town — and -ie is a friendly ending for a person. The word is informal. Musicians and fans say it with respect; it is skilled work, not just “the one who carries boxes”. You would not print it as a very formal job title, though people do put it on a backstage pass with a grin.
