A roadhouse is a restaurant or bar on a main road, usually outside a city, so people driving past can stop to eat or drink. In American English it also carries an older picture: a slightly rough place with loud music, maybe dancing — not a quiet family café. Older films and songs use it that way. Today it can just mean a casual eating place by the highway. Though actually, it is not a house you live in by the road, and it is not quite the same as a petrol-station rest stop, even if one sometimes sits next door.

An inn or similar establishment situated beside a road beyond the jurisdiction of a town or city. In the centuries before motor vehicles, such inns were places for travellers to stop at night during multi-day journeys, besides being public houses for their local countryfolk.
