Rivalry is what you have when two people, two teams, or two companies keep trying to beat each other for a long time — not one race or one test, but again and again. There is a feeling in it too: each side watches the other, and winning against that one opponent matters more than winning against anybody else.

It is a little more formal than just saying they compete, and it usually lasts. It can be friendly (you still like each other) or bitter (feelings get hard).
