A rite is a fixed set of actions people do for a serious or religious reason, usually in the same way every time, as part of a ceremony - a wedding rite, a funeral rite, or a "rite of passage," meaning an event that marks a big change in someone's life, like becoming an adult. It sounds more formal and traditional than the everyday word "custom."
