Ritalin is a medicine doctors use for ADHD, a condition where a person — often a child — is too active and finds it very hard to keep their mind on one thing for long. For some people it helps them pay attention and feel less driven to jump from thing to thing. It is a brand name from the 1940s; the chemical inside has a long scientific name, and other companies sell the same kind of medicine under other names. Though actually, it is not a “smart pill” for everyone, and it is not something you take because a friend has some. A doctor has to decide if it is right, because it is a strong medicine and the law treats it carefully. In everyday talk, people still say “Ritalin” even when the box shows another brand.
組成From Rita + -lin. The chemist Leandro Panizzon named it after his wife, Marguerite, called Rita. It became a trade name in the 1940s, and people now use that name for this kind of medicine.
