A rissole is a small cake of food fried in hot fat. The inside is usually cooked meat cut very small, mixed with mashed potato or bread so it holds together; then it is often coated and fried until the outside is brown and crisp. It is everyday food in Britain, Australia, and some other places — home cooking or a cheap café, not a fancy restaurant dish. Though actually, the filling is not always meat; some rissoles are made with fish or vegetables. It has nothing to do with risotto, even though the names look a little alike. In Australia, rissole is also used as slang because it sounds like a rude word; that is a joke use, not the food.
