A ringtone is the sound a telephone makes when someone is calling you. On old home phones it was a real bell. On a mobile phone it can be a short tune, a song, or any sound you choose. People say “change your ringtone” or “that’s my ringtone.” It is everyday language, not formal. Though actually, the word is mainly for the incoming-call sound. The beep or tune for a text message is more often called a notification sound, even if some people use “ringtone” for both.
