On a sailing ship, the rigging is the whole web of ropes, wires, posts, and chains that hold the sails up and let sailors pull them into place. Without it the sails cannot work. You can look up from the deck and see the rigging against the sky; sailors used to climb it. People also talk about the rigging of a stage or a climbing wall — ropes and supports in the same spirit — but the home picture is the ship. Though actually, English also uses rigging for cheating, as in rigging an election or a match, meaning someone has fixed the result. That comes from another use of rig, and it is not this sense. Here the word is just the ship’s ropes and spars, named from rig plus -ing.
