A rifleman is a man whose job or role is to fight with a rifle — a long gun you hold to your shoulder. Armies have used the word for a long time; some still use it as a rank or a job title. In older books it can sound a little historic; in military talk it is still normal. It names the person who uses that kind of gun, not a man who rifles through drawers looking for something. The word is built in the plainest way: the weapon, then man.
