To riffle papers or a book is to run your thumb along the edge so the pages flip past quickly — just enough to glimpse what is there, not to read, and not to search hard. You riffle through a magazine in a waiting room; you riffle a pile of letters to see if yours is in it. The movement is light and quick. Though actually, English also has rifle through, which sounds almost the same. That one is for digging in a hurry, often looking for something. Riffle is the gentle flick of the edges. Card players also riffle a deck, splitting it and letting the cards fall together; that is the same quick-flip idea, only with cards.

組成Word historians think this may be a changed form of ruffle, an old word for crumpling or messing something up, from Middle English ruffelen, related to Low German ruffelen “to crumple.” The picture fits — paper getting a quick, uneven flick — but it is only a likely story, not a sure one.
