Rickets is a children's illness. The bones do not harden the way they should, so they stay soft and can bend. Legs may bow; the chest or spine can change shape too. The usual cause is too little vitamin D. Skin makes vitamin D from sunlight, and food such as fish gives some as well. If a child lives with little sun, or eats very poorly, rickets can appear. It was once common in dark, smoky cities. It is rarer now, but it has not gone away, and doctors still watch for it. Grown-ups can get a close cousin of this, where bones go soft too, but rickets is the name we use for children. You meet the word in health lessons and history more than in everyday chat. It is not a word for shaky furniture; that is rickety, which only looks similar.
組成The name is old and local: it started in Dorset and Somerset in England, and nobody is sure where those speakers got it. A doctor, Daniel Whistler, later chose the learned medical name rachitis because it sounded like rickets, not because the two were truly the same word.
