The Rhondda is a valley area in South Wales, in the United Kingdom. For many years it was a coal-mining place: people went underground to get coal, and towns grew around the mines. That work was hard, and it shaped the whole area. By 1990 all the coal mines there had closed, and many people lost their jobs. Newer work came later, such as making cars. People often say 'the Rhondda' (with the), meaning the valley and the towns in it. It is a proper name. Though actually there is more than one valley there — a big one and a smaller one — but in English 'the Rhondda' covers that whole coal country.
