Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland, and its main port. Most of the country’s government, study, and visitors pass through here. books often add that it is the centre of Iceland’s fishing industry, and fishing still matters — though actually the city today is just as much about tourism, hot water from the ground, and being where run the country. The name is Icelandic Reykjavík, literally “Bay of Smoke”: the “smoke” is steam from hot springs, not factory smoke. English usually drops the accent on the í. Stress is roughly RAY-kya-vik.
